I laughed my ass off when this comment came up for moderation. How can such a well-written comment be a spam; Akismet must be wrong – I said to myself. Flattery had the better of me and the comment made its way to approval. Barely a day after the comment went live, I started receiving the same comment on other posts as well. Definitely not a flattering stuff any more, I had to mark off the published comment as spam and delete it.
From the one liner ‘thank you for sharing’ kinda stuff to the genuine-looking, well-drafted paragraphs, spamming definitely has come a long way. Identifying spam comments sometimes can be a real tough job… And sometimes, letting go of the identified ones may not be that easy.
Here are some real time examples from the heap of shit we receive on a regular basis. Email and URL fields have been deleted for obvious reasons. But the Author and comment fields have not been touched.

I too get a lot of spam comments, sometimes their genuine looking too! But I have a sharp eye (lol!)

You are right, comment spamming has really come a long way. My favorite is when they say something like oh, your site looks funny in IE6, not sure if you have checked it in that browser but I just wanted to let you know.
You can usually tell the spammers because the comment is offering vague praise. Well, they lay on the praise, but they are vague on why the post is specifically great, and then they always tell you it will be bookmarked and they will come back for more informative posts like this.
If I see a post that is blatant spam, I will spam it. If I know it is spam but I can see the guy at least tried, I will delete it without actually spamming it. However Akismet catches most of them so I don’t have to deal with it much.
The funny thing that the spammers don’t get is that any website that is going to let their crap through, is likely going to let other crap through, which is going to really devalue the site in googles eyes, so the link that they get will not provide much value anyway.
If they took the time to just read and make an intelligent and useful comment on 10 articles, they would likely be worth 500 of their crappy ones that happen to get through. They just don’t get it.
Funny stuff though.
