Conjunction – Some Funny Uses

We use them in our day-to-day communication. Yet, most of us don’t know them by name. Words like because, and, if, else, then, etc. are called conjunction since they are used to (con)join sentences.

‘Because’ is one conjunction we use so often. Can you think of a sentence ending in ‘because’? If you do, do let me know because as of now, everybody thinks:

In English language, no sentence ends in ‘because’ because ‘because’ is a conjunction.

‘And’ is another conjunction we use every now and then. Once a hotelier asked an artist to write a signboard. He wanted the artist to write – Tea and coffee are available. The final signboard looked somewhat like this:

Tea        and        coffee are available.

The hotelier, obviously dissatisfied at this, said to the artist:

You have left a lot of space between ‘tea’ and ‘and’ and ‘and’ and ‘coffee’.

And finally, this one for the computer geeks:

If ‘if’ is equal to ‘then’, then ‘then’ is equal to ‘else’, else ‘else’ is equal to ‘if’
